What is Eczema?

Eczema is a condition that affects millions of people in the World, yet few of them really understand it, if you suffer from eczema –and even if you don’t- is important to know about this condition that can be present in anyone.  Let’s begin then, by understanding what is eczema, and an overview of how it appears.

The term eczema in fact is used to describe different inflamed skin conditions, but is most commonly used to describe atopic dermatitis, a condition present in approximately 15% of the World population, and has a more common occurrence among children.

You know you have eczema when your skin becomes dry, red and presents itchy patches.  These symptoms can be present in any part of the body, but it appears mostly on the face, neck, inside of knees, elbows and ankles.

Causes of Eczema

To this day, doctors and researcher have not found the exact cause for eczema, but there are certain factors that are believed to have an influence on it. One of them is an abnormal function of the immune system, this condition can appear as a result of the skin coming in contact with certain materials or allergens.

Other factor that can increase the risk is family history.  There seems to be a genetic predisposition; people who have in their family history allergies, asthma and hay fever are more likely to develop eczema.

Diagnosing Eczema

Diagnosing this condition is done through physical examination by a dermatologist, and a check-up of the condition history (when eczema appeared, any changes in lifestyle/environment, contact with certain materials, etc.).  Diagnosis can be complicated as the appearance of the skin is similar with other conditions; in these cases a biopsy of the skin may be needed.
